How EMI works
An Equated Monthly Instalment is a scheduled payment toward a loan. In a typical reducing-balance loan, each payment covers interest due for the period and repays part of the principal.
What affects your EMI?
The loan principal, interest rate and repayment tenure are the main inputs. Fees, insurance, rate resets and lender-specific rules can also affect the total cost.
Shorter versus longer tenure
A longer tenure often lowers the monthly instalment but can increase total interest. A shorter tenure may raise the monthly payment while reducing the time interest accrues.
Check the full loan offer
Compare the annual percentage rate or equivalent total-cost disclosure where available, processing fees, prepayment rules, late fees and whether the rate is fixed or variable.
